The other fun thing about running D&D in something approximating an authentically medieval milieu is that you can have warlocks with proper lord-and-vassal relationships with their patrons, with all the intensely legalistic and excruciatingly complicated webs of rights and obligations that implies. It’s a nice alternative to the whole wizard-with-a-sugar-daddy business!

“You were supposed to levy troops to support me in my feud with the King of the thirteenth hell this past season.”

“I did! I raised that entire army of skeletons.”

“That you used to fight a dragon with your fellow adventurers.”

“Look, the charter says I’m obliged to raise troops under your banner. But it also says that you will provide lodging and transport for them in the field. I didn’t see a portal to hell open at all for those three months. And believe me, we looked.”

“…”

“Look, it’s not my fault you haven’t granted me the power to instantly send people to hell yet, all I’m saying. But hey. We did fight under your banner, so your demonic majesty received the credit for that dragon takedown, which ought to at least be some bragging rights down there, right?”

story time: when my brother was born I was about three years old and I can’t remember much, I just remember wanting to pick his name and finally settling on “Rainbow” and telling my parents hey so I decided we should name the kid Rainbow, top name right

bear in mind i was three and had all the naming capacity of a young fan making their first forays into making a power fantasy self-insert oc

but apparently dreams can get you somehwere because years later, when i was about thirteen i mentioned this memory to my mother, and she said “yeah, we called him that” and I was like “lmao as if you called him that I know brother’s name duh” and in short she got out his birth certificate, and yeah. My brother’s fucking middle name is, officially and legally, Rainbeau.

ok but it gets better. because my brother’s first name is Morgan, a welsh name which by some translations means “arc over the sea,” which can be argued means “rainbow”

my parents called my brother Rainbow Rainbow

i had too much power when i was three

My little brother was born when I was four. Since he was born in December, and Christmas was the only other thing on my mind at the time, I wanted to name him Santa Claus.

My parents named him Christopher Nicholas 😂

If y’all want a look at how depraved US soldiers are, I suggest watching The Kill Team. It’s about some fuckheads who were found guilty of killing random Afghan civilians for the thrill of it and planting weapons on them to make it seem like they were insurgents. At one point in the documentary one of these monsters is like “lots of other people do this, we didn’t think we’d get caught.” So keep in mind that the atrocities that we see in the US media are only a small fraction of the murders unjustifiable even by US military standards that soldiers regularly inflict, and most people who do anything will get to go on with their lives as usual.

this post made me go watch it and I’m 15 minutes in and I had to stop and take a break before continuing i think i’m going to throw up.  these guys are literally sitting there talking about how when they first entered the field they were excited and thought the firefights and violence were awesome but when it tapered off into being more about retrieving information and interacting with civilians they became frustrated and bored, and you can hear the defensiveness and resentment still in their voices that reality was not living up to their extremely violent fantasy of what war would be and what they had so eagerly signed up for. They speak so casually about murdering civilians and planting weapons on them like it’s some natural progression of their disappointment and dissatisfaction. the ‘what else were we supposed to do?’ tone in their voice is fucking terrifying.  they enlisted because they wanted to kill anyone they could without consequences and when their bloodthirst wasn’t satisfied in any ‘official’ capacity they fabricated ‘justifiable’ scenarios in order to murder people freely.  they’re just serial killers.  they’re serial killers but they have convinced themselves and other people they’re somehow different because their victims didn’t look like them and they wore uniforms as they killed them.

So I just went with my buddy while he got a rib tattoo, and they hurt like a lot, so he’s over there grimacing and being a huge manbaby so I just reach over and grab his hand so he can squeeze it because I’m a good person who helps others

And he’s clinging to my hand like it’s a life preserver and I’m being me and talking about nonsense like Grimace from the McDonalds commercials and how R2D2 is always ready to throw hands, and whatever, and the artist keeps glancing over at me and I’m like do your tattoo bro I’ve got my buddy handled

But then I realize he’s like, looking over because he can’t tell if he’s seeing something or not, and I glance down and I see my rainbow scalemail bracelet, and how I’m talking to my buddy all fondly and I’m like stroking his arm like he’s a wounded animal, and right as it clicks in my head the tattoo artist asks in his most nonchalant voice possible, like intentionally bland, I’m just talking about the weather haha what do you mean voice:

“So, are you guys close?”

And my gay ass is over to the side internally screaming because yeah, I am gay, but like this is just me being a good bro and my buddy is COMPLETELY OBLVIOUS TO WHAT IS HAPPENING BECAUSE HE’S A GARBAGE STRAIGHT PERSON AND HE SAYS

“Yeah of course, that’s why I asked him to come”

SO NOW THE TATTOO ARTIST THINKS HE’S RIGHT AND HE HAS A GAY COUPLE GETTING A TATTOO AND MY BUDDY HAS NO IDEA AND I’M AWKWARDLY SITTING HERE LIKE SHOULD I STOP HOLDING HIS HAND??? SHOULD I CORRECT THIS TATTOO ARTIST??? SHOULD I LET MY BUDDY KNOW??? MY GAY ASS DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO HANDLE BEING INCORRECTLY ACCUSED OF BEING GAY, WHAT DO YOU DO

So that tattoo artist is like “Cool man, that’s great. Good for you.”

So then my buddy is like can I get some water, and the guy comes back with one bottle of water and my buddy takes a drink and then hands it to me, and I’m like obviously he has to lay down and needs me to hold his water so I just hold it in my hand, but turns out he was offering me water, so he turns to me and is like Colton, drink some water, and I take a drink and my garbage lizard brain is like “You’re drink sharing in front of the tattoo artist, now he KNOWS he’s right”

So we’re talking about tattoos with the artist and I mention that I’m getting a tattoo in September and my buddy is like “Yeah I’m gonna go and hold HIS hand for that one haha” and the tattoo artist FUCKING SAYS “I mean, I should hope so”

I MEAN, I SHOULD HOPE SO

I MEAN, I SHOULD HOPE SO

AND NO ONE ACTUALLY BROUGHT IT UP. I KNEW WHAT THE TATTOO ARTIST WAS THINKING BUT DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING TO CORRECT HIM. NOW WHEN MY BUDDY GOES BACK AND GETS HIS NEXT TATTOO IN THE FUTURE AND I’M NOT THERE HE’S GOING TO GO “OH WHERE’S YOUR BOYFRIEND”

THIS IS SO SWEET AND PURE

Portrayal of Aunt May really tells you a lot about whether or not the writers drink their respecting women juice like everybody was all “Aunt May should be a fun and engaging character” and the most recent live-actions went “We’ll make her YOUNG and HOT BOOM DONE” and meanwhile Into the Spiderverse went “oh okay yes so she should be intelligent and competent and bad-ass!! she’ll play a role in the story and help our hero on his way!! she’ll be kind and welcoming even though she’s grieving!! she’ll keep her wrinkles and grey hair and sharp nose and have a cocky smile and love her nephew very much and also kick villains out of her house!!!!!!!” and like. who respected her character more let me ask you

“A long-term study of children raised by lesbians found that these children were less likely to suffer from physical and sexual abuse than were their peers who were raised by heterosexuals. This is thought to be due to the absence of adult heterosexual men in the households (Gartrell, Bos, & Goldberg, 2010). Girls raised by lesbians tend to have higher self-esteem, show more maturity and tolerance than their peers, and are older when they have their first heterosexual contact (Gartrell et al., 2005, 2010). Children raised by same-sex parents seem to be less constrained by traditional gender roles; boys are less aggressive, and girls are more inclined to consider nontraditional careers, such as doctor, lawyer, or engineer (Gartrell et al., 2005; Stacey & Biblarz, 2001). Over the course of more than 20 years, scientists studied the psychological adjustment of 78 teenagers who were raised by lesbian mothers. Compared to age-matched counterparts raised by heterosexual parents, these adolescents were rated higher in social, academic, and total competence, and lower in social problems, rule-breaking, aggression, and externalizing problem behavior (Gartrell & Bos, 2010). There are fewer studies of children raised by two men, but gay fathers are more likely than straight fathers to put their children before their career, to make big changes in their lives to accommodate a child, and to strengthen bonds with their extended families after becoming fathers (Bergman, Rubio, Green, & Padrone, 2010).”
~ Martha Rosenthal, Human Sexuality: From Cells to Society, p.247.

“having gay parents will harm children”

I love that this is cited and sourced ahhhh. Actual researched support! So good.

Here’s Gartrell, Bos, and Goldberg’s paper since whatever link that was is broken.
